Default Changing my MetaTags

Hi Everyone,

I have a vbulletin forum like this one and figured I could get a good answer from one of you guys.

Basically I want to change the meta description so that when my keywords are searched, the SERPs show that meta description.

At the moment I just get this:

"Welcome to the Poker Forums, Poker is Rigged. If this is your first visit, be sure to check out the FAQ by clicking the link above..."

Which is boring and uninviting.

However

According to my website my meta description is this "online poker discussion forums". Obviously that description is bad and I am going to change it to become more of a descriptive sentance. I have no idea why the meta description isn't actually working.

Google doesn't "always" use the Meta Description to display in the SERP's, but generally it will.

You had "online poker discussion forums" before, but Google was grabbing a snippet of text from your page possibly because they felt it was more descriptive and longer giving more information about the page.

Also i saw you have just changed to a new description,

"Poker forums at poker is rigged offer top quality poker advice and poker hand analysis. Learn from the poker experts!"

This IMHO it is slightly spammy, you have poker mentioned 5 times which is a bit much for a meta description. I would stick to no more than 3.

Also your Title is just your URL, this isn't good because you will rank well for your domain name naturally so you don't want or need to optimize for it.

I would look at changing it to something like "Poker is Rigged - The Poker Discussion Forum"

Ok thanks for the reply. I'll reduce the spammyness of the meta description. I run a vbulletin forum like this as you may have seen and I don't know how to change the title description? Could you help with that?

You can change your Meta Description in the vBulletin admin panel.

Just go to AdminCP >> vBulletin Options >> General Settings

There's 2 boxes there to alter the Meta Description and Keywords.

Ok all changed. I even changed my title to include the keyphrase "poker forums". I saw a jump in my SERPs from page 11 to page 7 after doing so. Is this coincidence or could it well be down to a change in the title tag?

I realise this isn't an SEO forum but would like to know.

Well this is the SEO section of a domain forum, so good enough.

The jump in rankings is a result of your Title change, the Title holds a "lot" of weight with rankings.

I just looked you up, you're now in #50 so you have jumped another 20 spots since you last posted. Grab some more nice links with the anchor text "Poker Forums" and you will move up more.

You should also Nofollow and block your calendar.php URL, having this indexed and passing weight to 1,000's of calendar pages is pretty wasteful.
